Prompt #33
Many people say this statement or very similar ones where one cannot buy happiness. That is both true and false in my eyes. First, it depends on your definition of happiness and what makes you happy. Some people do need money to do what they like and to be happy. People who spend their time on the internet and playing online games have to spend monthly fees to keep their internet running, and the fees get higher as they want better and faster internet. There are also people who enjoy going out to bars or restaurants with friends, but they have to pay for the food and drinks they get there. But, there are also people who like to sit out on their porch and watch the sky. You may think that that doesn’t cost any money, but you have to pay for your house right? And even if you didn’t have a house and just were to lay down in the park, you do have to get food at some point. It you don’t get food, you would starve and be in pain, which would lead to you not being happy anymore. The only way around this I could see is if you are religious and you go to Heaven or some other place like that for your religion’s afterlife theory, and are happy there. There is also the possibility that there is a country somewhere that doesn’t have monetary problems, but there is a very small chance of that being existent. Other than those, if you want to be happy on earth, you will need money to support yourself. 1According to a poll taken by CNNMoney in the US on how much money one needs to feel happy, only 6% of those in the poll said that money cannot buy happiness.1 That is a very small percentage of people who actually believe the famous quote from Benjamin Franklin. It is also quite sad how money pretty much dictates our lives. If your parents don’t have much money, then you don’t live in a good neighborhood. You then only get into public schools with bad classes and have a hard time just getting into a college, much less paying for it. Then you don’t get a good job and the cycle repeats.
