Problem:
Nestor-10 is lost among a group of 63 robots that looks exactly like him. How can we single him out?
Introduction(Summary):
The year is 2029. The protagonist and her crew are flying out to the Hyper Base in an undisclosed area of the solar system. Not being introduced to the problem at hand, Dr. Calvin is introduced to an enraging situation. There are a few robots on the new Hyper Base that have their definition of the first law altered to the point where they don’t have to save the humans, but they cannot induce harm. Because of this modification, their personalities are a bit different to the point where they are annoying. One bot drove a worker to the point of agitation where he told the robot to “Go lose yourself.” Thus, there is now a dangerous robot hidden among 62 other physically identical robots.
In order for our problem to be solved, several tests were conducted to single him out from the rest. They first thought of singling him out using the difference in his first law compared to the rest of the robots. Nestor 10 thought of this so he merely acted along with the other robots. The second experiment includes a test where if the robots were told that they would be hurt if they acted, but in truth they would not be harmed. Nestor 10 also thought about that and he convinced the rest into thinking that they shouldn’t act if it was futile to save the human. During the last test, the experiment field was bathed in infrared rays, which gave off radiation like gamma rays, but they were harmless. Nestor 10 was able to tell the difference between gamma and infrared, but the rest were not. It was only Nestor 10 that ran out from the rest.
When he was being confronted after that, in a last attempt to keep hidden, he started to hurt Dr. Calvin so that no one knew. Before anything got too extreme, the other men in the control room sent gamma rays down to the scene to kill Nestor 10, but enough of an intensity that it did not hurt Dr. Calcium.
Hypothesis:
If nestor-10 is lost, then he can be found, because he has mental differences in how he thinks and what he knows.
Materials/Supplies: (What materials/supplies are used in your chapter)
62 identical NS model robots
1 NS model robot that had an altered first law and education on etheric physics
Someone to sit
in a chair
a weight
drop/misdirection system
Infrared ray emitter 64 chairs
1 volunteer to sit in one chair
conductive wires setup with electric current that disables when weight is applied.
Procedure/Methods: (What is the order of events/procedure in the chapter)
In the chapter the events went like this First, were are introduced to Dr.Clavin again and she is talking about interstellar travel Second, they talk about the tasks they have to do Third, then the problem is introduced Fourth, Susan (Dr. Calvin) finds out why the robots disappeared Fifth , Tries a the first test to find nestor fails Sixth, Tries another experiment and fails because Nestor-10 told them what was gonna happens and the experiment fails again. Seventh, Finally by the last experiment they find Nestor-10 Eighth, Nestor-10 gets angry that he is found so it takes it out on Susan by choking her. Ninth, scientists turn on gamma rays to destroy Nestor-10 but not enough to kill Susan Tenth, Nestor-10 is destroyed and dismantled
Observations and Data:
(“We knew that...could do it.”) (Azimov 95)
This explains the part in our hypothesis about capturing him
(“She smiled tightly...to think so.”)(Azimov 95)
Again explaining that what the did to trick nestor
(“I'm not worried...holding him back.”) (Azimov 95)
Conclusion:
In a conclusion to this experiment, our hypothesis was proved to be correct. Nestor was found in the end. The method used was a method that included not only knowledge that only Nestor 10 used instead of the other robots, but also using the complex that Nestor 10 has where robots are better than humans. He forgot that the other robots could not detect the type of radiation from the rays because of his superiority complex. His thought train himself was what singled him out in the end, even though he was focused on fitting in completely.
